Sony Told to Cut Cost of PS3 or Lose Support to the Wii

Alan Martin - Monday 16.03.09, 14:11pm

Lagging behind in third place in the console wars, and persisting with a price tag that’s a little shy of double the market leader, it’s no surprise that game developers are putting pressure on Sony to drop the price of its powerful console.

According to Bloomberg, games developers are warning Sony that if they don’t make their console competitive soon, they’re going to slow their support for it in favour of the Wii, which not only boasts a market share of double the size, but is also cheaper to code for.

It’s hard for Sony to come back from this position. They’ve been operating at a loss on the PS3 hardware from the get go, thanks to the expensive Blu Ray drive, while the Wii continues to make a profit on every unit sold. They really can’t afford to sell it at more of a loss, but they can even less afford to lose the support of third party publishers.

With that in mind, I’d expect to see a Playstation 3 price cut within the next few months. Though whether or not we see it here in the UK remains to be seen, especially with Nintendo bucking the trend and pushing up their trade prices on the Wii
