The King of Fighters XII

The King of Fighters XII (KOF XII) is the latest installment of the popular and successful King of Fighters series from SNK Playmore and Ignition Entertainment.

Commemorating the 15th anniversary of the franchise that began in 1994, King of Fighters XII offers only 22 characters.  The characterse are all hand-drawn 2D sprites on 2D hand-drawn backgrounds. Though this is the lowest amount of characters ever in the King of Fighters series, each character has their own unique moves and styles.

For those of you who have not yet played King of Fighters, this is basically how the game is played. You are asked to pick three characters which will be in your team, select the order in which they play and then you take battle with your opponent. The game continues until all three characters on a team have been defeated.

Following The King of Fighters ‘98 and The King of Fighters 2002, The King of Fighters XII does not have a storyline.

Here are three new features of KOF XII:

King of Fighters XII introduces a feature called the ‘Critical Counter System‘. When a player lands a strong punch the character enters into ‘critical counter’ mode and has a short period of time whereby their character can link a combination of attacks. Once the critical counter time period has expired the player can finish with a special move.

‘Guard Attack‘ allows a fighter to intercept and hit an opponent’s strike damage.

The ‘Clash System‘ (called the ‘Sousai’ or ‘Deadlock’) will propel characters away from each other if blows are landed simultaneously.

King of Fighters XII has three game modes:

In Arcade Mode you play five stages racing against the clock.  This can be as little as 15 matches.  In Arcade Mode the major let down is that the game play doesn’t really offer any story at all, which is a major let down.

The Versus Mode enables you to play multiplayer battles with your friends or the computer offline, while the Online Mode is probably King of Fighters XII’s main feature as the story mode is short and easy. The online feature allows you to play against others in cyberspace in order to compete for the highest battle point ranking, play matches online for fun not for points and to join friend’s games.

Another feature of this game for the PS3 is the trophies. This game has a total of 51 trophies, including a platinum trophy. King of Fighters XII offers a selection of interesting trophies which can be quite challenging but not too difficult for most gamers.
