Is the game of Bingo dead?

John Williams - Friday 26.03.10, 18:14pm

Bingo has long been a popular gambling game.  Members joined large clubs in order to have a chance of winning a share of the jackpot. In many parts of UK these Bingo Clubs acted as social clubs where friends met regularly to enjoy a few glasses of beer, have a chat and play Bingo. Many disused cinema buildings were turned into Bingo Halls. This has declined considerably during the past couple of decades.

The arrival of online bingo has changed the whole social structure of the old fashioned bingo hall. Members can now sit in comfort at home and join up to a kind of social network that allows them to chat online, play whichever Bingo games they want to play, and come and go as they please. There isn’t even any need to get dressed up anymore and players can sit in their pyjamas in the evening and enjoy the game.

So, the game of Bingo is certainly not dead. In actual fact it seems to be undergoing something of a revival and a modernisation. The image of old ladies drinking their tea and chatting about their ailments, in badly lit Bingo halls, is one for the scrapbook. Enter an online Bingo session and all the lights are flashing, there’s sound and the chat is flowing at a rate of knots.

The thrill of the game is more intense in this vibrant atmosphere and there is always the possibility of winning. It’s relatively cheap to play and other members are available to chat with at all times of the day and night.  The game is just the same as it always was but it somehow feels different and attracts all age groups. Judging by the number of advertisements being shown in the media for online Bingo, interest must be growing at a faster rate than ever.
