1Up reports that the iPhone app store has passed the 6,000 game mark, which is seriously impressive, and gives credence to the commonly held belief that it could be a serious competitor the PSP and DS. Oh, and the NGage and Gizmondo, of course.
It almost certainly needs to pick up its quality output, but there are certainly a few games on there that warrant the impressively low price point. Not owning an iPhone myself (I’m on the considerably less fashionable HTC Touch) I can’t give my own impressions, but Joystiq reckon you can’t go wrong with Edge, Rolando, Zen Bound, Sway and Fieldrunners.
I’d also give Crayon Physics Deluxe a go, because it looks like an innovative indie game that really benefits from the touch input – the kind of thing the DS used to excel at before publishers got lazy (I remember Yoshi Touch and Go, Kirby’s Magic Paintbrush and Pac Pix).
Big developers are starting to take note too, and porting some of their franchises over. I Love Katamari, Guitar Hero, Sim City, Super Monkey Ball and Puzzle Quest are all there with the likes of Spore, Metal Gear Solid and The Force Unleashed due to follow soon.
But while the quality is questionable, the prices certainly aren’t. With most games in the £2-£10 bracket, it really puts the DS and PSP to shame. If the iPhone has no other impact on the handheld gaming landscape then to make pricing more competitive, I’ll be over the moon.
